History:
Nuklon was aboard the Justice League satellite when it was attacked by the Hyperclan. While Green Lantern and Wonder Woman defended the satellite, Nuklon escaped with the remaining members inside Metamorpho who brought them safely through the atmosphere. Nuklon suffered severe injuries from which he recovered. (JLA #1, Jan. 1997)
Al entered a new phase of his career when he designed a new costume and adopted the name Atom-Smasher (in tribute to the Atom and Cyclotron). A short while later, Wildcat informed Al of Wesley Dodds' death (JSA Secret Files #1, August 1999).
Al attended Wesley Dodds' funeral, where Fate appeared to reveal that he had been murdered. Al and several other heroes were then attacked by the Sons of Anubis (JSA #1, August 1999). In the aftermath, the Scarab revealled that a new Dr. Fate was about to be born. At the same time, he also explained that a mysterious entity known as the Dark Lord was planning on murdering the child, so he might assume Fate's mantle. Joining a small group of heroes, Al travelled to Vancouver and sucessfully located the Fate child. They also encountered HAawkgirl, who was trying to take the child to safety. In the ensuing confusion, the Dark Lord Mordru attacked (JSA #2, September 1999). Just as Mordru was about to deliver the killing blow, the rest of the heroes arrived and drove him back. The assembled heroes journeyed to Fate's tower to rescue the Fate child. Again, Mordru easy bested the heroes, but at the last moment, the Star-Spangled Kid enabled the true new Dr. Fate to arrive and take form (JSA#3, October 1999). With the power of the new Dr. Fate (who was revealled to be Al's former teamate, Hector Hall), the heroes bested Mordru. Returning to New York, Al agreed to join the reformed JSA (JSA #4, November 1999).
Not long after the battle with Mordru, Al attended opening of JSA museum. He also helped battle and defeat a rampaging Black Adam (JSA #6, January 2000).
After recieving reports of Obsidian's strange behaviour, Al and the JSA travelled to Milwaukee to investigate. Most of the team was captured by Obsidian upon their arrival (JSA #7, February 2000). Eventually, Al and the others were rescued by Black Canary and Dr. Mid-Nite (JSA #8, March 2000). Al aided in battling his former friend's shadow wraiths and witnessed his defeat at the hands of Sentinel (JSA #9, April 2000). Upon returning to the JSA mansion, Al learned of Wildcat's battle against the reformed Injustice Society (JSA#10, May 2000).
Al's next adventure occured when he and the JSA were magically de-aged by the boy-witch, Klarion. Redubbed as Bigg Boy, Al and the others journeyed to the Planet Myrg to retrieve Doiby Dickles "de-aging" ray (Sins of Youth: Starwoman and the JSA Jr. #1, May 2000).
After his mother was killed in a plane crash engineered by Kobra, Al and the JSA were contacted by the D.E.O. to help stop the terrorist. While part of the JSA left to deal with the manical Extant, Al and the remainder of the team assualted Kobra's base on Blackhawk Island (JSA#11, June 2000). Eventually, Al captured Kobra. Al would have killed the terroris, if not for the timely intervention of Jack Knight. In the aftermath, the JSA learned that they had been manipulated by the D.E.o. for their own goals. Returning to the mansion, the team learned from Metron that Extant had killed the rest of the JSA and that the universe was about to end (JSA #12, July 2000).
Using Hourman's timeship, the JSA journeyed to the new universe created by Extant's meddling (JSA #13, August 2000). There, the team battled Extant's minions and learned that their allies were alive and well inside Fate's amulet. Using Hourman's hourglass to distract Extant, Al helped rescue the recently resurrected Dove (JSA #14, September 2000). Dove sacrificed herself to save the JSA, enabling the team to disperse Hourman's hour of power amongst them. Ultimately, it was Al who defeated Extant, by stripping him of the Worlogog. Extant attempted to escape via a time tunnel, but was pursued by Atom-Smasher and Metron. Al convinced MEtron to use the Worlogog to cause Extant and Terri Rothstein to switch places seconds before the firey plane crash. After being reunited with his mother, Al tendered his resignation to the JSA (JSA #15, October 2000).
Months later, Al would meet Mr. Bones at the grave of Sylvester Pemberton to discuss the death of Extant (JSA #21, April 2001).
Eventually, Al returned to the active JSA roster when the team was journying to Thangar to rescue Hawkgirl. He and the team arrived just in time to see Carter (Hawkman) Hall resurrected from the Well of Spirits (JSA #23, June 2001). The combined might of the JSA agreed to help the Thangarians battle the monsterous Ominar Synn and his Dark Wingmen. The battle went badly for Atom-Smasher, who was imprisoned within the Crypt, one of Synn's henchmen (JSA #24, July 2001). Finally, Al escaped and the JSA were able to destroy Synn. Following thier victory, the team returned to Earth (JSA #25, August 2001).
During the Worlds at War, the JSA was ordered by President Luthor to assualt Imperex Prime's mothership. Following a skirmish with Black Adam, Al was involved in an effort to run interference for the main JSA task force. Following the detonation of the ship's fuel cells, the JSA safely returned to Earth (JSA: Our Worlds at War #1, September 2001).
Following an arm-wrestling match, Al became involved in a fight with Black Adam. The fight was briefly interupted by the arrival of Captain Marvel (JSA #26, September 2001), but quickly began anew after a sucker punch by Adam. The brawl was finally ended thanks to the intervention of Hawkman. Later that day, Al participated in the election for a new JSA chairperson. Finally, Al and the team were abducted by the mysterious Roulette (JSA #27, October 2001).
Al awkened in "The House", a betting arena for supervillians. With his powers negated by the vile Tap, and pumped full of agressors, Al was forced to face Black Adam in a duel to the death (JSA #27, November 2001). With Adam's aid, Al overcame the agressors. Tap turned loose a Warhound on the duo, which was quickly defeated. After incapacitating Tap, Al and Adam's powers returned and the two finally located their allies. Frustrated by the damage the JSA caused, Roulette teleported the heroes back to New York City (JSA #30, January 2002).
Following Black Canary's resignation, Al and the team welcomed her replacement, Power Girl (JSA #31, February 2002). A short while later, Star Spangled Kid caught Al involved in a mysterious conversation with Black Adam (JSA #32, March 2002).
After the Ultra-Humanite remade the world in his own image, Al found himself under the villian's thrall. Al helped ambush the JSA in Emerald City (JSA #34, May 2002), but was eventually freed by Jakeem Thunder (JSA #35, June 2002). Al recovered in time to witness the death and rebirth of Johnny Thunder, as well as the restoration of the old world. Al attended a funeral service for Thunder, one that was held to give his family a sense of closure (JSA #37, August 2002).
Atom-Smasher, Black Adam, Northwind and Brainwave begin plotting against Captain Marvel (JSA #40, November 2002).
While searching for answers in regards to an Apokolips attack on President Luthor, 7 of the JSA and JLA members betray their allies. During the destruction of the JSA brownstone, Atom Smasher is rendered unconsious and many of the heroes are expelled from Earth. Al is ultimately rescued by the remaining JLA/JSA alliance. Eventually, the heroes are able to return, free their allies from the control of the Seven Deadly Sins and defeat the masterminds, Johnny Sorrow and Desparo. Al recovers and attends the dedication of the new JSA tower in Manhattan. (JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice, January 2003).
During the trial of Kobra, Al and the JSA found themselves guarding the courthouse from a mob of his suporters. Kobra sucessfully blackmailed the JSA into allowing him to escape, a decision the Al bitterly opposed. Feeling that the team should be justified in using lethal forced against someone like Kobra, Al and Adam resigned their memberships from the JSA (JSA #45, April 2003).
Al next surfaced at one of Kobra's bases, where he helped kill Kobra's followers and captured the criminal terrorist. Kobra began mocking Al, telling him that he couldn't do what was necessary to stop him. Al's new allies, Black Adam, Northwind and Brainwave then arrived. While Al held Kobra, Adam punched through the villian's chest, tearing out his heart (JSA #51, October 2003).
Black Adam then led Northwind, Brainwave, Atom-Smasher, Eclipso and Nemesis into Kahndaq. The metahuman force made short work of the military, and under Adam's instructions, Atom Smasher killed the country's dictator. Adam then liberated the country under his control (JSA #56, Early March 2004). While Al enjoyed the thanks of the Khandaq people, his dreams were haunted by an accusing voice. As expected, Adam learned that the JSA was on their way to Kahndaq. As their ship entered Khandaq airspace, Adam had Brainwave send his former teamates one warning to turn back. When they refused, Adam led his team into action against the JSA. Aided by both the people of Khandaq as well as Northwind's people, Adam's forces easily captured the JSA (JSA #57, Late March 2004).
Atom-Smasher captured Stargirl, bringing her back to their headquarters. Once there, he learned that the voice he had been hearing was the Atom. When confronted by Black Adam, Al hesitated breifly, but didn't expose his former comrade (JSA #58, April 2004).
