Origin Issue: Superman: The Doomsday Wars #1, 1998

History:

Clark Peter Ross was born two months prematurely, after his mother was in a car accident. While the doctors at the Smallville County Hospital were able to deliver the child, the antiquated facility didn't have the facilities to keep him alive (Superman: The Doomsday Wars #1, 1998).

At Lana's request, Superman agreed to fly baby Ross to a state-of-the-art facility, near Atlanta. As they neared Atlanta, Superman was ambushed by the monster known as Doomsday. Using newly exhibited intelligence, the monster easily defeated Superman and took the dying child to his citadel (Superman: The Doomsday Wars #2, 1998).

In actuallity, Doomsday was under the control of the alien Brainiac, who planned to use baby Ross as a templete for a new body. Eventually Clark Kent and Pete Ross managed to free the child, who was brought to full-term by Brainiac's machines (Superman: The Doomsday Wars #3, 1998).
